Following the protester's attack on the Yoga Day event held today morning, the President of the Maldives, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih reassured that the incident is being treated as a matter of serious concern.

After proclaiming that yoga was against the tenets of Islam, a crowd of protesters stormed the Football stadium where more than 100s diplomats and government officers, were taking part in an event celebrating International Day of Yoga today morning. The crowd attacked the participants and vandalized the property until Maldives Police Service was forced to control the crowd of people. Six people have been arrested in connection with the incident, says the Maldives Police Service.

Following the incident, President Solih in a tweet addressed the malicious acts of violence aimed at disrupting public safety. He said that an investigation has been launched by the Maldives Police Service and reassured that those responsible will be swiftly brought before the law.



International Yoga Day is celebrated on the 21st of June every year around the world. This day has been celebrated in the Maldives, since 2015.
