Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has urged employers to notify the relevant authorities if their employers do not comply with the minimum wage rules.

The Economic Minister made the request in response to a question from Ras Online about the complaints of some people on the non-compliance with the minimum wage rules introduced last year.

Some people who spoke to Ras Online said that some businesses are now acting as small businesses as the minimum wage rule is exempted. They also alleged that this was an attempt to deceive the government into not paying the minimum wage.

"Now, only resorts, civil service, and Maldive's famous big businesses fall into the category of minimum wage. Then there are just small street shops only. Marts, big cloth shops, and large businesses selling expensive goods have now become small street shops." An employee of a well-known clothing store on Majeedi Road told Russ Online on condition of anonymity.

Economic Minister Fayyaz said he had not received any such complaint officially. However, if there is a complaint or issue, the pension registry and ex-pat registry will look into details to determine which category the business falls under. Therefore, the Economic Minister has urged the employers to inform the relevant authorities if they do not comply with the minimum wage rules.

When the minimum wage was introduced in the Maldives, Small and Medium Enterprises were exempted from it. Therefore, Small and Medium Enterprises will not have to pay the minimum wage for their employees.

According to the Small and Medium Enterprises Act, the Small and Medium Enterprise or micro-enterprise is considered to be an enterprise whose total income does not exceed MVR 500,000 per annum and net profit does not exceed MVR 75,000.

The minimum wage is Rs 4,500 per month. This is the amount that businesses operating in the private sector, except the Small and Medium Enterprises, are required to pay as minimum wage. This is also the monthly amount to be paid for an employee working 8 hours a day in Small and Medium Enterprises. Therefore, some sources say that except for resorts, guesthouses, and civil service, other businesses that do not fall into Small and Medium Enterprises are doing a lot to get rid of the minimum wage. Some people allege that the business is trying to make it look like a small business.
