Former President and current Speaker of the Parliament Mr. Mohamed Nasheed says that he hopes that Sri Lanka can now move forward, as the Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has officially resigned from Presidency.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who is on a private visit to Singapore, has sent his resignation letter to the Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament today. Mohammed Nasheed, who is also a close ally to President Gotabaya also confirmed the news of his resignation.

President Nasheed said he did not believe he would have resigned so soon if he had been in Sri Lanka, as there were growing fears on Gotabaya's life.

In addition, President Nasheed praised the action taken by the Maldivian government in this regard and wished the people of Sri Lanka well.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa took over the presidency of Sri Lanka after winning the 2019 presidential election.

The people came out against the Sri Lankan government after the country's economic situation deteriorated, making it difficult to import oil and other basic commodities and rising commodity prices.

In March this year, the country stopped paying its foreign debt and declared bankruptcy. Since then, public protests escalated. The protesters had also entered the presidential palace and the presidential office, taking them under their control. Then only, the Sri Lankan president agreed to resign.

The Sri Lankan president resigned after handing over power to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. Sri Lanka's new president is scheduled to be elected on the 20th of this month.
