There is a possibility of monkeypox in the Maldives, said the Health Protection Agency (HPA) of the Maldives.

Monkeypox was declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday. Addressing the issue in a statement, the HPA said that the monkeypox outbreak is likely to spread to the Maldives as well.

However, compared to COVID-19, the risk of spreading such a disease is higher among people who live in close contact with each other, further read the statement. Hence, HPA advised to seek medical aid and avoid contact with others if anyone experiences any symptoms.

The HPA said the disease is most common among men, and that the disease is common among homosexuals and rarely among women and children.

The HPA also reassured that the agency is working to prepare for and respond to the outbreak.

In addition to raising awareness among health workers and establishing testing facilities, the HPA is strengthening surveillance, setting guidelines for treating infected people, and making vaccines and medicines available, said HPA in the statement.
