Former Vice President Dr. Mohammed Jameel Ahmed has said that the solution is to execute the death penalty to stop extreme crimes
Dr. A.S. Jameel's remarks came after a woman was brutally murdered inside a house in the city. The woman's neck was severed in the incident. The horrific incident took place late last night. Both her arms and legs were reportedly amputated.
In connection with that, Dr. Jameel said the government's message not to carry out the death penalty is the wrong message.
“..The government not carrying the death penalty sends a wrong message. There are dangerous criminals who should not be released under any circumstances. The solution is the death penalty.” said in a tweet by Dr. Jameel.
Previously, Minister of Home Affairs, Imran Abdullah had said that under the long-standing moratorium on execution of death sentences handed down by judicial courts in Dhaka, all governments have so far acted consistently.
Currently, there are three people in the Maldives whose death sentences have been upheld by the Supreme Court. It was Dr. Afrasheem Ali's killer Hussain Homam Ahmed, lawyer Mohammed Najib's killer Ahmed Murrath and the killer of Abdullah Farhad of S. Hulhudhoo Lilymaage, Mohamed Nabeel. These death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2016, but the death penalty was not carried out.
