Maldives and the US have signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation in the defence and security domain.
On behalf of the Maldives, the agreement under the name of “Framework for U.S. Department of Defense-Maldives Ministry of Defense, Defense and Security Relationship” was signed by Minister of Defence, Uza. Mariya Didi. and on behalf of the US government, the agreement was signed by Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence for South and South East Asia, Reed Werner.
During the signing ceremony held in the US defence department, Minister Mariya said that this agreement will add immense value to the excellent partnership between the Maldives and the United States, specially in the defence and security domain. She also mentioned the importance of bilateral discussions and support against piracy, violent extremism, terrorism and illicit traficking, to the peace of the Indo-Pacific and the Indian Ocean region.
This agreement outlines many bilateral activities, including discussions, engagements and opportunities in areas such as maritime domain awareness, natural disasters and humanitarian relief operations. This agreement will further strengthen the partnership between the two countries, especially in the defence and security domain.
