Speaking at the parliament, the speaker of the parliament Mr. Nasheed has stated that it is the responsibility of the parliament to follow through the investigations and recover the embezzlement of funds of the fraud and corruption in connection to the ventilator procurement in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Mr. Nasheed gives the assurance in supporting a proper investigation and charges pressed for everyone involved in it. He said this following the Prosecutor General's decision on dismissing the case while the investigation of the Auditor General and the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC), shows corruption involved in the ventilators procurement
Nasheed has also said that the Judiciary Committee of the parliament should be looking into the disagreement between the ACC and PG office following the investigation of corruption involved in the ventilators procurement.
PG has decided to dismiss the cases against the 11 people accused of the corruption involved in the ventilators procurement due to lacking enough evidence to press charges against them. Meanwhile, the audit report has mentioned that fraud and corruption are involved in the 75 ventilators procurement in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Former Minister of Health Abdulla Ameen was also included in the 11 people who are accused of being involved in the embezzlement of funds in connection to the corruption involvement.
Following the PG’s decision, a no-confidence motion against Health Minister Abdulla Ameen was submitted to the Parliament. But before it could have been processed Mr. Abdulla Ameen resigned from his designation of the Minister of Health.
