The number of new COVID-19 infections in China reached its highest level in six months on Sunday, a day after health officials said that they will maintain tough coronavirus controls, presumably disappointing recent investor hopes for a relaxation.
The National Health Commission reported that China recorded 4,610 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, of which 588 were symptomatic and 4,022 were asymptomatic. This is the highest number of cases since May 6 and is higher than the 3,837 new cases that were reported the day before, of which 657 were symptomatic.
While case numbers are extremely low by global standards, China has stuck with a zero-COVID approach nearly three years into the pandemic that involves lockdowns, quarantines, frequent testing, and a drastic decrease in inbound travel.
Health authorities reaffirmed their dedication to using the "dynamic-clearing" strategy to treat COVID-19 infections as soon as they appear at a news conference on Saturday.
Hu Xiang, a disease control officer, remarked that China's anti-COVID-19 actions are "totally proper, as well as the most practical and efficient."
"We should uphold the value of putting people and their lives first, as well as the more general policy of avoiding both external imports and internal rebounds."
