Opposition political party coalition, PNC, and PPM meet with the Election Commission.
As per the Election Commission, the meeting was held to discuss the challenges faced by PNC and PPM for the upcoming local council elections (LCE) and women's development committee elections (WDCE).
During the meeting, the opposition political parties accused the commission of differentiating the opportunities given for political parties causing more challenges to the opposition parties. Along with this, the opposition parties requested the Election Commission for permission to travel to the Islands to continue campaigning.
Following the requests, Election Commission officials stated that there are no restrictions to continue to campaign for the upcoming local council elections (LCE) as long as the Health Protection Agency (HPA) guidelines are followed.
Further during the meeting, Election Commission officials detailed the ongoing process in preparation for the upcoming local council elections (LCE) planned for March 2021. As per the Election Commission, reregistration and final listing of the candidates will be continued online soon.
The Election Commission informs that over 4100 people applied for the local council elections (LCE) and out of which 71 candidates have taken back their names from candidacy.
Meanwhile, the local council elections were postponed from April 2020 to March 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
