Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan met with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Sochi, Russia's Black Sea resort, on Monday. Erdogan aimed to convince Putin to reinstate a grain export agreement with Ukraine that helped alleviate a global food crisis.
Last July, Russia pulled out of a United Nations and Turkey-brokered agreement that had been in place for a year. They cited problems with exporting food and fertilizer and claimed that not enough Ukrainian grain was being distributed to countries in need.
Putin told Erdogan they would discuss the Ukraine crisis and that Moscow was open to discussions on the grain deal.
Erdogan previously played a significant role in convincing Putin to stick with the deal.
The purpose of the grain deal was to transport grain from Ukraine to global markets via the Black Sea. This was meant to alleviate the global food crisis. But it has been exacerbated by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February of last year, according to the United Nations.
