Former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that while President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration claims it is moving the economy upright, ordinary people continue to struggle.

Speaking to members of the People’s National Front (PNF) on Thursday, Yameen accused the government of failing to address the economic hardships faced by key sectors, particularly the fishing industry. He said fishermen are grappling with rising fuel and dollar prices, making it increasingly difficult to go out to sea and cover operating costs.

Yameen claimed that around MVR 12 million owed to fishermen remains unpaid, describing it as a significant sum that has added to their financial distress. He questioned why the government had not engaged directly with fishermen to resolve their concerns, instead accusing authorities of responding by arresting protesters.

He stressed that while tourism is a major pillar of the economy, fishing remains the country’s oldest and most vital industry and should be protected and encouraged. The former president said the government must listen to fishermen’s concerns and take practical steps to resolve their problems.

Yameen also criticized President Muizzu for failing to deliver on pre-election promises to stabilize the economy, accusing the administration of shifting blame rather than addressing the root causes of the current economic difficulties.
