On Saturday, Maldives reached the milestone of 100,000th tourist arrival since the border opening on July 15.

The Maldives reopened its borders on July 15, after closing it for four months due to Covid-19. Since the opening, the Maldives has seen an increase in tourist arrivals from day-to-day.

During a grand event held on Saturday held at Velana International Airport, the 100,000th tourist was identified by the Ministry of Tourism, together with Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Maldives Immigration, and Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The 100,000th tourist, Ms. Jasmin Burki, arrived from Switzerland via Emirates. On arrival, she was escorted outside by officials of MMPRC and Maldives Immigration, and greeted by the Deputy Minister of Ministry of Tourism, Managing Director of MMPRC, Controller General of Immigration, and CEO and Managing Director of MACL.



The Minister of Tourism, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom has stated that surpassing the milestone of 100,000 tourists in advance of the projections is encouraging, and this achievement is the outcome of a unified Maldives approach to a global challenge. Minister also said that this is the result of the President’s decision to open the Maldives borders with a strong focus on safety with the minimum possible inconvenience to tourists. Minister thanked the tourism industry partners, employees, associations, and government institutions for the support.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Maldives closed its borders on March 27. The border was reopened along with the tourism industry on July 15, with enhanced precautionary measures against Covid-19. The tourism industry was reopened with a safe tourism guideline issued by the Ministry of Tourism. While the resorts and liveaboards resumed operations on July 15, and guesthouses resumed operations on October 15. As of December 14, guesthouses and hotels in the greater Male’ region are scheduled to reopen.
