The Maldives government has decided to sign an agreement to procure the Covid-19 vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and Oxford University.

As per the ‘public finance declaration’ released by the Finance Ministry, the Maldivian government has decided to sign an agreement with AstraZeneca Singapore PTE LTD to procure the vaccine. The declaration further states that the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca is in high demand due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, and it is available for procurement only from specific parties, released globally following specific procurement policies.

The ‘public finance declaration’ was released this Thursday to announce the temporary suspension of some of the provisions of the Public Finance Regulation. As per the declaration, the provisions which are concerning the agreement with AstraZeneca for the procurement of the vaccine will only be suspended.

The ‘public finance declaration’ states that the Finance Ministry will be conducting an internal audit on spending under the agreement, and ordered for the finance executive at Health Ministry to pay special attention to the expenses.

Meanwhile, further details on the financial expenses to procure the vaccine under the agreement are yet to be disclosed.
