Shark fins seized at Velana International Airport
Maldives Customs Services has seized 429 kg of shark fins at Velana International Airport.

Further detailing, Maldives Customs Services has informed that the seized shark fins were packed and ready to be shipped in 21 boxes. The shark fins were concealed in a shipment declared as salt fish. Maldives Customs Services has said that the shark fins weighed a total of 429 Kilograms.

Maldives Customs Services has also informed that further investigations are ongoing related to it.



Shark Fishing and products related to sharks have been prohibited in the Maldives since 2010. A penalty between 5,000 Rufiyaa and 400,000 Rufiyaa is set for fishing and using shark products as businesses.

In regards to the seized shark fins, former Parliament Member Mohamed Musthafa has said that whoever tried exporting shark fins did not commit a sin, and everyone should be able to collect a halal profit from halal goods. Musthafa also accused that such businesses are described as sins by a political party. He also congratulated the people who tried to export shark fins.

Former Parliament Member of Thimarafushi Constituency, Mohamed Musthafa, was known for exporting shark products.
