Vice President His Excellency Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef met with the Prime Minister of Samoa, Hon. Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa, during a courtesy call on Wednesday. The meeting took place as part of the Vice President's official visit to Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024.
During the meeting, Vice President Latheef expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality extended by the Samoan government and praised the excellent preparations made for the success of CHOGM 2024. He highlighted the importance of the gathering as an opportunity for Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to collaborate on shared challenges.
The Vice President and Prime Minister discussed key issues facing Commonwealth members and SIDS, particularly the growing threat of climate change, the need for sustainable development, and the preservation of their unique cultures. Vice President Latheef commended Samoa’s leadership in the Alliance of Small Island Developing States (AOSIS) and its role in organizing the CHOGM summit.
The discussions also touched on areas of cooperation between the Maldives and Samoa, including environmental protection, climate change response, tourism, economic growth, and trade. Both leaders emphasized the importance of working together to address these pressing issues, given their countries’ vulnerability as island nations.
The Maldives and Samoa established diplomatic relations on August 2, 1993, and this visit underscores the continuing collaboration between the two nations. Vice President Latheef is leading the Maldives delegation to CHOGM 2024 as part of his efforts to strengthen international partnerships and promote shared solutions to global challenges.
The Vice President's visit marks an important step in fostering closer ties between the Maldives and Samoa, with both nations reaffirming their commitment to working together on the issues most critical to their survival and prosperity.
