President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially launched a nationwide project aimed at establishing fuel storage facilities in all atolls of the Maldives. The initiative is designed to enhance fuel accessibility, particularly for fishermen and the general public, by ensuring a stable and affordable fuel supply across the country.

State Trading Organisation (STO) Managing Director Shimad Ibrahim revealed that the project, which is expected to be completed by February 2026, will set up fuel storage facilities in every atoll. The initial phase of the project was completed in January this year with the fuel setup in Hulhumale’. Currently, STO provides fuel at base rates from FSM sheds in GA Kooddoo and N Felivaru islands.

By February 2025, STO plans to have the fuel setup in Addu City, Hulhumeedhoo, fully operational. In addition, several other islands are scheduled for completion by October 2025, including HA Ihavandhoo, HDh Hanimaadhoo, F Nilandhoo, GDh Faresmaathodaa, and Fuvahmulah City. Further fuel storage facilities will be established in various islands, including Sh Milandhoo, N Manadhoo, B Thulhaadhoo, V Felidhoo, Th Hirilandhoo, R Dhuvaafaru, AA Mathiveri, M Mulah, Dh Kudahuvadhoo, and L Gan by February 2026.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, reaffirmed the President’s commitment to providing fuel at STO rates in at least one island of each atoll. He emphasized that fuel would be declared a basic necessity, ensuring long-term, sustainable solutions to the country’s fuel challenges. Minister Shiyam noted that the government aims to eliminate the long-standing reliance on temporary measures within the first three years of the administration.

This project is part of the government's broader pledge to provide affordable and accessible fuel to all Maldivian citizens, as highlighted in the Dhivehinge Raajje manifesto.
