The Ministry of Housing has assured that the southern atolls will not be excluded from the government’s regional development plan, specifically in creating urban centers. The statement comes in response to claims by the opposition, particularly the MDP, that the southern atolls were left out of the urban center development initiative.

Today, the government unveiled plans to establish urban centers in seven locations nationwide. The opposition raised concerns over the apparent exclusion of the southern atolls from this plan.

However, the Ministry of Housing clarified that the President’s structural development vision includes northern and southern atolls. The government aims to develop a northern structural development zone, which will encompass the four northernmost atolls, and a southern structural development zone covering the four southernmost atolls.

The Ministry emphasized that the southern atolls, including areas in Northern Huvadhu Atoll, Southern Huvadhu Atoll, Fuvahmulah City, and Addu City, are part of the broader development strategy aimed at enhancing infrastructure, economic growth, and population alignment with urban development. The ministry also stressed that reports suggesting the southern regions were excluded from the urban center initiative were misleading and aimed at creating confusion among the public.

The Housing Ministry reassured the public that developing seven urban centers, including those in the southern atolls, remains a priority in the government’s overall development framework.
