The Maldives is expected to receive the Covid-19 vaccine from India on Wednesday. The Maldives will become the first country to receive the Indian Covid-19 vaccine from India.
The Maldives government has given all regulatory approvals and permissions to receive Oxford Astrazeneca's COVISHIELD vaccine produced by Serum Institute of India. The vaccine is expected to arrive on Wednesday afternoon by Air India flight at Velana International Airport Malé.
The Maldives has been the largest Covid-19 assistance recipient from India. So far, India has supported the Maldives with medicine supply, food supply, medical team, training, and financial assistance of $250 million.
The government of the Maldives has already confirmed receiving the Covid-19 vaccine during the first quarter of 2021. Through the COVAX facility of the WHO, Maldives has confirmed vaccine for 20 percent of the population.
As per the Health Protection Agency (HPA), three percent of the vaccine will be allocated to frontline health and social care workers, and 17 percent of the vaccine will be prioritized for people of age 50 years and above and those at high risk of developing complications.
