President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has outlined key priorities for the 2025 budget, emphasizing economic justice, healthcare, and education. Speaking at the Republic Day celebrations at Dharubaaruge, he shared that the budget aims to address economic disparities and bolster support for vulnerable citizens while reducing the national debt and improving essential public services.

Dr. Muizzu explained that the 2025 budget had been developed in consultation with international financial institutions, integrating necessary reforms in subsidies, Aasandha insurance, pensions, and state-owned enterprises. He assured the public that these changes are focused on supporting those most in need. Additionally, the President stressed that the Government has avoided deficit financing through money printing or borrowing, opting instead for recovering outstanding funds to reduce the national debt. Through these efforts, he noted that the government has settled bills under MVR 5 million to strengthen the economy and enhance citizens’ financial well-being.

In addition to the economic reforms, President Muizzu highlighted initiatives to diversify the economy, including expanding financial services, establishing the International Finance Services Authority, and exploring the potential for digital currency. The Maldives also pursue free trade agreements with China and Turkey, with future agreements planned for India and the UK. The President expressed optimism about the future of tourism, noting that the opening of the new terminal at Velana International Airport is expected to attract over 2 million tourists annually.

Moreover, President Muizzu announced that education and healthcare will be top budget priorities for 2025. Reflecting on recent progress in the education sector, he highlighted expanded training programs, skill development projects, and increased scholarships and loan schemes to improve access to higher education. To ease challenges for students in Malé City, the Centre for Higher Secondary Education-Malé has been reopened, and 23 schools across the country now offer higher secondary education. Additionally, the Government is initiating the expansion of Al Madharusathul Arabiyyathul Islamiyya on a newly designated plot, catering to growing educational needs.

The President also addressed the importance of increasing the local teaching workforce, particularly for lower grades. He introduced a National Teacher Training Programme to bring recent graduates into teaching roles. This year is expected to see a record number of teacher training sessions that support the administration’s commitment to building a skilled, locally driven education workforce.

Through these initiatives, President Muizzu reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to economic justice, sustainable development, and strengthening essential services, underscoring the Government’s dedication to a prosperous future for the Maldives.
