The Senate has unanimously decided to dissolve the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the second-largest political party in the country. The decision, made during a Senate session chaired by Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam and Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon, saw all 42 senators present voting in favor of dissolution.
The PPM, established by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his supporters following a split from the DRP, was officially registered on October 27. According to the Election Commission, the party currently has 34,698 members on its roster.
The PPM played a pivotal role in Maldivian politics, notably winning the 2013 presidential election with former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom as its candidate. However, internal divisions and legal battles later emerged. President Yameen, after losing control of the PPM to President Maumoon, went on to form the People's National Congress (PNC) in 2019 as a backup party.
Though the PPM and PNC operated as separate entities, they were managed by a joint council. Their coalition endorsed President Yameen for the last presidential election. However, following his disqualification from candidacy, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu contested and won the presidency on the PNC ticket.
Following President Yameen's departure from the PPM and the establishment of his new political entity, the People's National Front (PNF), Dr. Muizzu, who now leads the PNC, has decided to expand it into the primary governing party.
According to the Election Commission, the PNC currently has 28,983 members. With the dissolution of the PPM, the PNC is expected to consolidate its position as the leading political entity under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's administration.
