The Elections Commission (EC) has issued a formal advisory to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) over remarks made at a recent rally, where it was suggested that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu should be treated similarly to former President Mohamed Amin, who was overthrown and died in exile.

EC member Hassan Zakaria revealed that the commission has received numerous complaints about the remarks, which have sparked widespread concern. The matter has also been brought to the attention of the police for further investigation.

In response, the EC sent a letter to the MDP cautioning against making similar statements at public events. Zakaria emphasized the importance of maintaining respectful and lawful discourse in the political arena, warning that such incidents could lead to penalties under the amended Political Parties Act.

The Act stipulates fines of up to MVR 100,000 for both individual members and political parties involved in illegal activities. Zakaria stated that if the MDP repeats such actions, the commission would not hesitate to enforce these penalties.

The advisory highlights the EC's commitment to upholding responsible political conduct and ensuring that public speeches do not incite division or unrest.
