The progress of women is central to the advancement of families, societies, and economies, stated Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr. Aishath Shiham, during a seminar on empowering women entrepreneurs.
The seminar, titled 'Empowering Women Entrepreneurs through Digital Transformation', was organized by the Ministry of Social Development in collaboration with the UN ESCAP's Asian and Pacific Training Center for Information and Communication Technology for Development (APCICT).
Dr. Shiham highlighted that the economic empowerment of women is one of the government’s top priorities. She noted that President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has undertaken significant initiatives to provide women with increased opportunities in various projects and programs.
She explained that the government has made significant progress in strengthening access to financial assistance for women-led businesses and emphasized that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure women can participate equally in the economy.
To support women entrepreneurs, the government has introduced a dedicated loan scheme in collaboration with the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Finance Corporation (SDFC), called 'Fashaa Madhadhu'. Under this initiative, 25% of the loans are reserved for women with disabilities. So far, 60 individuals, including one person with disabilities, have been selected to benefit from this program.
Dr. Shiham also remarked on the significance of the workshop, describing it as a milestone in the efforts to create equal opportunities for women in the workplace. She added that this was the first large-scale program focused on advancing women’s economic empowerment through digital transformation.
The Minister concluded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive development and ensuring women’s progress as a cornerstone of national growth.
