The Government of Maldives has strongly condemned Israel’s recent decision to approve the expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied Syrian Golan.

In a statement released on December 16, 2024, the Maldivian government denounced the move as a clear violation of international law, including relevant United Nations Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, and a setback to ongoing peace efforts in the region.

The Maldives has called on the international community to take immediate and firm action to pressure Israel to halt its illegal settlement activities and cease its aggression on Syrian territories. The government emphasized that the Syrian Golan has been under occupation since 1967, and Israel’s actions undermine the legal framework established by United Nations resolutions, particularly Security Council resolution 497 (1981).

Reaffirming its commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, the Government of Maldives reiterated its unwavering support for regional and international efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in Syria, while ensuring the realization of the aspirations of its people.
