Nine officials from the Housing Ministry have been suspended over allegations of allocating land to individuals not included in the land ownership scheme. The move comes as police intensify their criminal investigation into the scandal.

The allegations suggest that land meant for eligible applicants under the scheme was unlawfully distributed, raising serious concerns about transparency and accountability. While the names and specific roles of the suspended officials have not been disclosed, the suspensions underscore the gravity of the situation.

The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) board also suspended all members of its board of directors yesterday, except for Chairman Ahmed Naseef. Among those suspended is HDC Managing Director Fazul Rasheed, who has been linked to the ongoing investigation. The Privatization and Corporation Board (PCB) has also suspended MWSC Deputy Managing Director Mohammed Fazeel Rasheed, brother of HDC Managing Director Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has criticized the government’s handling of the issue. The party called for Housing Minister Ali Haider’s resignation, citing negligence in overseeing the scheme.

Police have stated that they are questioning individuals involved in submitting documents related to the alleged irregularities. However, those questioned claim the documents were prepared under the previous government.

The controversy continues to draw widespread attention as authorities investigate the misuse of the land ownership scheme, which was intended to provide equitable land distribution.
