The National Disaster Management Center has revealed that temporary shelter and food have been provided to 226 individuals from 36 households who have been affected by the heavy rain that hit Malé yesterday.
Due to the heavy rain that started yesterday morning, streets in Malé were flooded, and water entered houses and buildings, causing significant damage to many households and businesses. In connection with this incident, 774 parties called for assistance, of which 554 requested sandbags to prevent water from entering.
This adverse weather has affected mostly the Central Maldives, with flooding and tidal surge incidents occurring in various islands. In particular, the Disaster Management Center noted that Inguraidhoo and Maroshi have suffered damage due to tidal surges.
In addition to Malé, the following islands have also been noted to have suffered varying degrees of damage due to flooding:
* Hinmafushi (Malé Atoll): 60% of the island was flooded and power outage
* Guraidhoo (Malé Atoll): 60 houses damaged to various extents
* Maamigili (South Ari Atoll): 4 houses suffered notable damage
* Nilandhoo (North Nilandhe Atoll): 80% of the island was flooded
* Magoodhoo (North Nilandhe Atoll): 9 houses damaged, 1 house evacuated for safety
* Feeali (North Nilandhe Atoll): 1 house temporarily evacuated
* Kudahuvadhoo (South Nilandhe Atoll): 10 houses damaged
* Meedhoo (South Nilandhe Atoll): 10 houses damaged
As the Maldives National Defence Force(MNDF)'s efforts to drain the floodwater in Malé did not yield adequate results, civilians took the initiative to dig a channel near Maafannu Rasfannu to drain the water. The situation in Malé streets improved to allow normal traffic only by late night.
