President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the construction of the Maakurathu port, which has faced delays due to various challenges, will be completed within this year.

The President made this assurance during a visit to Maakurathu in North Maalhosmadulu Atoll as part of his tour of the region.

Acknowledging the development challenges faced by the island, the President stated that addressing the port construction and erosion issues is essential to realizing the island's full development potential. He assured residents that the government is committed to completing the port project and establishing a public works center on the island within the year.

Highlighting other key priorities, President Muizzu said the government is working to resolve human resource shortages in the health sector and enhance technical capabilities. He also emphasized plans to improve the education sector and provide more opportunities for sports and recreation, which he views as vital for community health and well-being.

As part of these efforts, the President announced that a new football stadium will be built in Maakurathu this year. He also pledged to implement additional projects in the coming years to further advance the island's development.

Addressing the nationwide housing crisis, the President confirmed that housing units will be constructed in Maakurathu under the current budget, bringing much-needed relief to residents.

President Muizzu concluded his visit to the northern region Thursday night, reaffirming his Administration’s commitment to sustainable development and improved living standards for all Maldivians.
