Former Elections Commission (EC) Chairman Fuad Thaufeeq has denied allegations of illegally admitting members to political parties during his tenure.

The allegations accuse Fuad of recruiting 39,000 members to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) between September and December last year. Addressing these claims, Fuad emphasized that he carried out his duties lawfully until stepping down as EC Chairman on November 23.

He urged the public to approach such allegations logically.

According to the EC register, the ruling PNC’s membership rose to 68,968 by December, while other political parties experienced a decline in numbers, with the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) losing approximately 7,000 members.

Fuad, who served two terms as EC Chairman, currently holds the Maldives' Ambassador to Thailand position.
