Following the ceremony held this morning at Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE) to initiate the nationwide inoculation drive, the President, Speaker of Parliament, and the Chief of Justice received their first dose of Covid-19 vaccine.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, and Chief of Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan were the first few to receive the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine today. Thirty-six individuals, including the President, Speaker of Parliament, Chief of Justice, state dignitaries, frontline healthcare staff, and elderly and persons with comorbidities, received their initial dose of the two-dose vaccine today.
After receiving the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih gave hope to inoculate everyone in the Maldives soon.
With the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid thanked the Indian government in a tweet for the generous donation of the Covid-19 vaccine.
Minister of Defence Mariya Didi also tweeted on reconfirming that she had also received the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine today.
In addition to the Foreign Minister and Minister of Defence, the Health Minister Ahmed Naseem and Gender Minister Aishath Mohamed Didi also received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine today.
The vaccine rollout campaign, the “Covid-19 Dhifaau” kicked off in Malé, Addu, and Kulhudhuffushi cities with the Covishield vaccine.
The 100,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India arrived in the Maldives on January 20. Covishield is based on the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, co-developed by the Oxford University and AstraZeneca to combat Covid-19. The Covishield vaccine was authorized for restricted emergency use in the Maldives by the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) on January 28.
