On International Day of Clean Energy, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated the Maldives’ strong commitment to transitioning to renewable energy sources, emphasizing the importance of protecting the environment and combating climate change.

In his message on the occasion, President Muizzu reflected on the global significance of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to clean energy. He highlighted the Maldives’ particular vulnerability as a low-lying island nation, stressing that investing in renewable energy is essential for the country’s future.

“As a nation facing the frontline of climate change, investing in renewable energy is not only a necessity but a vital commitment to the future of our islands,” President Muizzu said. He noted the significant progress made in the country’s renewable energy sector, particularly through solar power initiatives. He also outlined the Maldives’ ambitious target to generate 33 percent of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2028.

The President pointed to the Energy Act and the energy sector’s roadmap as vital steps towards ensuring that the country’s energy supply is sufficient, reliable, sustainable, secure, and affordable. He also commended the private sector for its investment in renewable energy, encouraging continued dedication to advancing the sector. These efforts, he said, not only contribute to global climate goals but also strengthen the nation’s energy security and economic resilience.

Acknowledging the international support received, President Muizzu expressed his gratitude to the Maldives’ global financing partners for their role in helping the country turn its clean energy ambitions into reality. He called for increased support for Small Island Developing States, which face unique challenges in transitioning to sustainable energy solutions.

In his concluding remarks, the President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the environment, ensuring a cleaner and healthier future for the nation, and setting the Maldives as an example for other countries to follow in their pursuit of clean energy.
