The Health Protection Agency (HPA) reinstates strict safety measures with the recent rise in Covid-19 cases.
The HPA announced strict measures with revisions to Covid-19 health and safety protocols this Tuesday. The announcement came following the recent rise in the number of daily reported Covid-19 cases.
These measures include:
- Extension of the curfew in place for the Greater Male’ area. The curfew will now last between 11 pm and 4:30 am.
- Ban on vehicles from the streets of the Greater Male’ area from 20:30 to 4:30.
- Closing of preschools, nurseries, and daycare centers, while universities and colleges conduct their sessions online.
- Closing all parks except for parks and spaces allocated for exercise.
- Suspending all sporting events and gyms to revise sessions to permit only solo sessions.
- A negative PCR test of 72-hours required to travel from Male’ City, to other islands.
- Mandatory face masks to be worn in public in all inhabited islands across the Maldives. (Masks must be worn in a way that covers nose, mouth, and chin)
According to the announcement, the revision to Covid-19 health and safety protocols will last for two weeks and will be revised further based on daily cases.
In addition to this, the Health Emergency Operation Centre had revealed that 30 percent of the recent Covid-19 cases corresponded to the new variant of Covid-19 discovered earlier in the United Kingdom.
Along with the strict measures, Maldives will focus more on vaccination to curb Covid-19 cases. The Maldives initiated the nationwide vaccination drive with the ‘Covid-19 Dhifaau’ campaign. The vaccine rollout program’s initial phase kicked off in Malé, Addu, and Kulhudhuffushi cities. It will target at-risk individuals over 50 years of age or who have underlying medical issues; health and social workers; and essential frontline staff.
