The Maldives Police Service is reviewing its handling of a case involving a stroke sufferer initially accused of driving under the influence of a substance.
The incident occurred yesterday at 10:13 a.m. when police received a report of a van swerving and crashing into the road divider on the bridge connecting Phase One and Phase Two. Authorities suspected the driver was under the influence and took him into custody.
However, a subsequent urine test returned negative results for substance use. The driver was released after being held at the station for six hours.
A social media post claimed the police was repeatedly informed about his medical condition, but immediate attention was not given. It was only later confirmed that he had suffered a stroke.
Police have acknowledged the incident and stated that they are reviewing the procedures followed. They assured that corrective action would be taken if any irregularities or negligence are found.
The van involved in the incident was also towed following the accident. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details.
