The General Purpose Committee of the Parliament has approved a motion to suspend parliamentary sessions during the month of Ramadan.
The motion was introduced by PNC MP Abdullah Rifau to amend the Parliament’s rules of procedure.
During a meeting held today, the committee members deliberated on the proposal, with the majority, including PNC members, supporting the motion. However, Hulhudhoo Constituency MP Mohamed Shahid expressed his opposition to the decision, raising concerns over the change.
The amendment proposes that the first parliamentary session of the year, originally scheduled from February 1 to May, will now conclude by February 15. The remaining two sessions will proceed as planned, with the second session from June 1 to August 15, and the third from October 1 to November.
The new rule will take effect for the current parliamentary year.
