President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that modifications to the harbour breakwater and land reclamation work in Ban'didhoo will commence no later than next year.

The announcement was made during his visit to the island as part of his ongoing tour of South Nilandhe Atoll. Addressing residents, the President highlighted the island’s space constraints and urged the Island Council to revise the land use plan. He particularly emphasized the need to relocate hazardous facilities, such as fibre workshops and waste management sites, away from residential areas. The Government has pledged its full support in implementing these changes once the Council finalizes its review.

Responding to concerns from local fishermen and vessel owners, the President confirmed that the harbour breakwater would be modified and expanded. He acknowledged that the project required significant investment but stressed that it was a crucial long-term initiative to support Ban'didhoo’s future growth. Additionally, the Government has committed to strengthening the island’s fishing industry and other economic sectors.

The development plan also includes several key projects. Infrastructure improvements for Ban'didhoo School and Health Centre are scheduled to begin this year, while previously halted projects—such as the fitness and recreation centre at the Youth Centre—are set to resume within a month.

President Muizzu concluded his visit by commending Ban'didhoo’s residents for successfully integrating modern development while preserving the island’s rich cultural heritage.
