The Maldives' first government-run pet care facility, Olhuhiya, will soon be launched under the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, according to State Minister Ali Safwan Ibrahim. The facility, which aims to provide care for stray cats, has been officially transferred to the ministry following the completion of legal and administrative procedures.
In an interview with state media, Safwan emphasized the urgency of beginning operations as per the president’s directive. The facility includes a quarantine area, a veterinary clinic and laboratory, a pharmacy stocked with medicines for cats, and designated living areas for the animals.
The city council formally handed over the facility to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare on Wednesday. The agreement was signed by the Secretary-General on behalf of the council, while State Minister Ali Safwan Ibrahim signed on behalf of the ministry.
Authorities expect the facility to improve animal welfare and public health by providing proper care and shelter for stray cats in urban areas. The initiative marks a significant step in addressing the stray animal population through humane and structured management.
