Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar has called on local tourism operators and guesthouses to adhere to government regulations when catering to tourists, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

In a post shared on X, the minister emphasized the importance of ensuring that food and drink services for non-fasting tourists are conducted in a manner that is not visible to the public. He urged operators to maintain cultural sensitivity and respect the traditions of the communities where they operate.

Local tourism has expanded significantly in many islands across the Maldives. However, during Ramadan, concerns have been raised about tourists violating cultural norms, including consuming food and beverages in public during fasting hours and wearing attire deemed inappropriate in public spaces.

Authorities have reminded guesthouse operators that compliance with regulations is essential to maintain harmony between the tourism sector and local communities. The minister has urged stakeholders to work together to ensure a respectful and smooth experience for both tourists and residents during the holy month.
