The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has condemned remarks made about a child during an opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) protest.

In a statement issued tonight, HRCM stated that it has been monitoring MDP’s ongoing demonstrations since March 7. The commission noted that a child was referenced in a manner that violated their dignity during one of the protests.

HRCM emphasized that such actions should not be justified under freedom of expression and strongly condemned them. The commission called on relevant authorities to investigate the matter and take appropriate action. It also urged the public to refrain from any actions that could directly or indirectly harm a child’s dignity.

While the commission did not specify the exact remarks made, reports indicate that an MDP activist referenced President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s son during a recent demonstration.

HRCM also reminded protesters to consider public safety, avoid disrupting traffic and pedestrian movement, and called on law enforcement to act within legal boundaries while managing demonstrations.
