Former Foreign Minister, Dr Ahmed Shaheed
Former foreign minister, Dr Ahmed Shaheed said that there is a need for democracy, and the need increases in challenging times.

In regards to the Democracy day remarks by HEP Ibrahim Solih, Dr Shaheed mentioned that democracy is not only for peace time, and if it is only for peace time, we will not benefit from democracy. Although democracy will be useful for any situation, the need of democracy is more in challenging times and we can achieve the most of it with proper development and maintenance of democracy.

During the democracy day remarks, the President HE Ibrahim Solih noted that, like every other country affected by Covid-19, the pace of social, political and economic activity has slowed in the Maldives. President Solih called upon all individuals, as well as state and government institutions to rally together, uphold democratic principles, and collectively strive to build back better from the disease.

Although HEP Mr Ibrahim Solih addresses challenges to uphold democratic principles during the Covid-19 pandemic, Dr Shaheed states that there is a need for democracy, and the need increases in challenging times.
