President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has vowed to transform the National Thalassaemia Centre into a more compassionate and patient-friendly service provider.

Speaking on the 'Rayyithunnaa Eku' podcast hosted by the President’s Office, he detailed ongoing reforms and future plans for the centre.

Following recent concerns about the facility, the President visited the centre and announced key remedial measures. He noted that a civil servant has been appointed to manage operations, which previously lacked structured oversight. Additionally, staff reshuffling has been undertaken, and the recruitment of five new nurses is underway to improve patient care.

Addressing resource constraints, the President assured that budgetary provisions are being arranged to procure necessary testing equipment. He also pledged close supervision of grievances raised by parents and caregivers, including concerns over blood filter availability.

Regarding the relocation of the Thalassaemia Centre, President Muizzu revealed plans to expedite the completion of the “Orange Hiya” building, which will house the facility. The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) is set to take over construction work on April 28, aiming for completion within a month. The President further announced that, once operational, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will establish an exclusive bus stop and provide free transportation for patients.

In line with his presidential pledge, President Muizzu also disclosed plans to develop a state-of-the-art thalassaemia care facility, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare services for those affected by the condition.
