The Disability Council of Maldives has urged to uphold the dignity and rights of people with disabilities, following controversial remarks made on a television program.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the council condemned comments aired on a program on Raajje TV, on the 24th of this month. The remarks, which referenced individuals with disabilities, autism, and Down syndrome, were described as degrading and disrespectful.

The council emphasized that persons with disabilities are entitled to special protection under international treaties to which the Maldives is a party, as well as under the country’s Constitution. Additionally, the Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Financial Assistance Act guarantees their dignity and respect.

As an institution dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the rights of people with disabilities, the council denounced the use of language that undermines their dignity. It also called on all members of society to work together to ensure the protection and respect of people with disabilities.
