President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu marked the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace with a powerful message emphasizing the role of sport in uniting communities and promoting social inclusion across the Maldives.
In a statement released Friday, President Muizzu highlighted the significance of this year’s theme, “Levelling the Playing Field: Sport for Social Inclusion,” aligning it with his administration’s vision to ensure equal access to sports and recreational opportunities regardless of age, gender, or location.
“We reaffirm our commitment to harnessing the power of sport as a force to achieve unity, empowerment, and equal opportunities,” the President said, reiterating that his government is pursuing transformative initiatives to make sports accessible and inclusive for all.
Among the key projects, President Muizzu announced plans to establish Fitness and Recreation Centers on every island within the next two years. This initiative, he said, would encourage healthier lifestyles, support mental well-being, and serve as vital hubs for youth engagement and community development in the Maldives' geographically dispersed population.
Additionally, the government is developing a 20-year National Sports Development Plan to decentralize sports across the country. The plan aims to ensure that training programs, competitions, and talent development opportunities are accessible nationwide, empowering athletes and sports enthusiasts regardless of where they live.
“By embracing the values of fairness, accessibility, and diversity in sport, we are not only creating opportunities for participation but also strengthening the social fabric of our nation,” the President added.
Calling on all stakeholders—including athletes, coaches, associations, and communities—President Muizzu urged collective efforts to use sport as a tool for inclusivity, empowerment, and national progress.
Earlier in the day, the President also shared a post on his official X account to commemorate the occasion.
