Maldives Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdulla Khaleel met with Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, Dr. Ian Borg, on Monday to discuss strengthening ties between the two island nations.

The meeting, held at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry for Foreign Affairs and Tourism in Valletta, highlighted shared values and common challenges faced by the Maldives and Malta, despite their geographical distance.

Both ministers described the visit as a key moment in revitalizing Maldives-Malta relations. They emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation through knowledge-sharing, joint initiatives, and collaboration on mutual priorities.

As small island states, both nations reiterated their commitment to environmental sustainability, particularly in the shift towards renewable energy. The ministers also explored opportunities to enhance trade and attract foreign investment, with a focus on building a more inclusive and resilient economic partnership.

The discussions further welcomed greater people-to-people engagement, with potential for expanded collaboration in tourism, fisheries, and higher education.

The meeting concluded with a mutual understanding to continue working closely to advance shared goals and strengthen diplomatic ties.
