Maldives recorded a 40 percent increase in fish exports during the first two months of 2025, according to the latest data from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

A total of 14,222.6 metric tonnes of fish were exported in January and February, compared to 10,526.7 metric tonnes during the same period last year. The monthly data shows a steady rise, with 5,710.93 metric tonnes exported in January and 8,511.63 metric tonnes in February.

Among the different types of fish exported, blackfish led the category, with 10,402 metric tonnes shipped as of the end of February.

The government has also made progress on commitments to support local fishermen. In line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to pay fishermen within 48 hours of selling their catch, the administration has cleared MVR 850 million in outstanding payments owed to fishers from previous periods.

The government continues to emphasize strengthening the fisheries sector, which remains a critical pillar of the national economy.
