Over 43,000 people across the Maldives have received the first jab of the Covishield vaccine from the nationwide inoculation drive.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), 35,289 people have now been inoculated under the program from the greater Male’ region. Out of this, 3,967 people were vaccinated in the last 24 hours.


HPA has stated that 8,429 people have now been inoculated under the program from outside the greater Male’ region. Out of this, 1,237 people were vaccinated in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, a total of 43,817 people have now received their first jab of the Covid-19 vaccine from the mass vaccination program and out of which 5,204 people were vaccinated in the last 24 hours.

The vaccine rollout program kicked off on February 01 with Covishield vaccine donated by the Indian government.

The 100,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute of India arrived in the Maldives on January 20. Covishield is based on the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, co-developed by the Oxford University and AstraZeneca to combat Covid-19.

In addition to this, Maldives has also received the Sinopharm vaccine as a donation. Sinopharm vaccine is developed by a Chinese company. China has pledged to donate 100,000 doses of the same vaccine to the Maldives.
