The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has approved the decision to hold an extraordinary congress before August 15, as internal competition heats up among contenders for the party’s presidential ticket.

The decision was made during the 22nd meeting of the 4th session of the MDP National Assembly held Saturday night at the party headquarters. A total of 81 members attended the session, with 75 voting in favor of holding the congress.

Following discussions, the Assembly resolved to form a special committee to organize the congress. The committee is required to submit its report to the National Assembly before May 15.

The meeting also agreed to establish a rapid response team, though further details on its mandate were not disclosed during the session.

The move comes as the party faces increasing internal competition for leadership ahead of the next presidential election.
