An Israeli airstrike struck the northern gate of the Kuwaiti Field Hospital in the Muwasi area of the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, killing a medic and injuring nine others, including patients and medical staff, according to hospital spokesperson Saber Mohammed. Two of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.
The Muwasi area, where the hospital is located, has become a refuge for hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians living in makeshift camps. There has been no immediate comment from the Israeli military regarding the strike.
This incident follows a series of Israeli attacks on medical facilities throughout the 18-month conflict. On Sunday, Israel targeted Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in northern Gaza, which was one of the last remaining hospitals providing critical care in the area. That strike resulted in the death of a patient during evacuation and caused severe damage to the emergency room, pharmacy, and surrounding buildings, according to the hospital administration.
The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, which oversees Al-Ahli Hospital, condemned Sunday’s attack. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres expressed alarm over the strike, emphasizing that under international humanitarian law, medical personnel and facilities must be protected.
The Israeli military has claimed that Hamas operates from within hospitals, including command centers, but has yet to provide evidence. Hospital staff and international organizations have repeatedly denied these claims and accused Israel of endangering civilians.
The war, which began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched an attack on southern Israel killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, has led to a devastating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel’s military response has since killed nearly 51,000 people, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which states that women and children make up more than half of the casualties. The offensive has displaced about 90% of Gaza’s two million residents and left large portions of the territory in ruins.
