The director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, is being held in harsh and degrading conditions by Israeli forces, his lawyer told AFP. Detained during an Israeli raid on the hospital in December, Abu Safiya has been accused of being a Hamas operative — a claim he denies.

Lawyer Gheed Qassem said the 52-year-old paediatrician was tortured and humiliated during interrogations, first at Israel’s Sde Teiman base and later at Ofer prison. She described his health as “very worrying,” citing fractured ribs, heart issues, and extreme weight loss.

Israel has designated Abu Safiya an “illegal combatant,” allowing his indefinite detention without trial. Amnesty International and WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus have called for his release.

A social media campaign under the hashtag #FreeDrHussamAbuSafiya has gained international traction, as concerns grow over the treatment of detained Palestinian medical workers.
