President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has expressed optimism about introducing PayPal, the world’s leading online payment platform, to the Maldives.
Speaking during a youth-focused podcast series, the President said the government has been actively working to make PayPal services available in the country. Responding to a question from a young listener, he noted that PayPal is one of the most widely used platforms globally for digital transactions and highlighted the importance of such tools in supporting economic growth, particularly for freelancers and small businesses.
“There is now a visible path forward,” President Muizzu said. “We are very hopeful, and we will continue to pursue it with determination.”
Efforts to bring PayPal into the country began under the administration’s digital economy agenda. In August last year, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed and senior officials met with representatives from PayPal to discuss the possibility of enabling full access to the platform for Maldivians.
A formal proposal was submitted to PayPal in September, but the government has yet to disclose the outcome of those discussions.
