Sultan Mahmood Chaudhry, the head of Pakistan-administered Kashmir, has called for urgent international mediation as tensions with India escalate following a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir last month.
India blamed Pakistan for the April 22 assault that killed 26 tourists, a claim Islamabad denies. In response, Pakistan says it has “credible intelligence” that India is preparing military action.
“There is a lot of activity going on and anything could happen, so we have to prepare for it,” Chaudhry told Reuters, warning of possible escalation and urging countries like Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE to step in as mediators. He also appealed to the US, UK, and the United Nations to help prevent conflict.
Chaudhry said his administration is coordinating with the Red Crescent Society to prepare humanitarian aid, including medical and food supplies, for potential conflict-affected areas.
Tensions along the Line of Control (LoC) remain high, with Chaudhry reporting regular cross-border firing and the downing of two Indian drones. He also noted increased activity by Indian Rafale fighter jets near the LoC, although none had crossed the border.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has urged both countries to avoid confrontation, while the US and UK have also called for restraint.
