Pakistan’s military launched “multiple attacks” using drones and munitions across India’s western border late Thursday and early Friday, the Indian army said, as hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbors deepened following recent deadly clashes.

The strikes follow India’s air raids on what it described as “terrorist camps” in Pakistan on Wednesday, a response to a suicide bombing in Indian-administered Kashmir last month that New Delhi blames on Islamabad. Pakistan has denied involvement in the attack and dismissed India’s retaliatory strikes as “unfounded” and “politically motivated.”

Since then, nearly four dozen people have died in cross-border firing, missile exchanges, and drone incursions. India’s army accused Pakistan of “numerous ceasefire violations” along the Line of Control in Kashmir and said it had repelled drone attacks, vowing a “befitting reply.”

Pakistan has not responded to the latest Indian claims, but earlier rejected accusations it had targeted Indian cities including Pathankot, Srinagar, and Jaisalmer.

In Kashmir’s Samba region, India’s Border Security Force said it had foiled a “major infiltration bid” on Thursday night. In Uri, heavy shelling destroyed homes, killing one woman and injuring another, according to a security official.

Sirens rang out for hours in the border city of Amritsar, and residents were urged to stay indoors. In Jammu city, student Ansab described powerful blasts at dawn, saying, “windows started shaking as if they will break.”

As global concern grows, the US and China have called for restraint. “We want this thing to de-escalate as quickly as possible,” said US Vice President JD Vance.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since their independence in 1947, two of them over Kashmir, which remains at the core of their decades-long rivalry.
