President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated his commitment to empowering the Maldivian people by proposing key constitutional reforms that ensure public authority in removing elected officials and enhance the efficiency of democratic processes.

Speaking on the sixth episode of the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, President Muizzu stressed that genuine public empowerment begins with giving citizens the authority to remove officials they have elected. He said Maldives does not need to replicate systems from other nations but can instead create homegrown solutions that strengthen democracy and build public trust.

Among the proposed reforms, the President expressed support for conducting presidential and parliamentary elections simultaneously, a move he said could be especially beneficial for a country like the Maldives. He also backed the introduction of a preferential voting system to avoid costly second rounds of presidential elections, noting that such a change would follow research and public input.

The President also proposed capping the number of parliamentarians at the current 93 seats, highlighting the need to balance representation with practicality. In addition, he announced plans to revise eligibility criteria for Council and Women’s Development Committee elections and restructure Atoll Councils based on population size.

To ensure transparency in council spending, the Ministry of Finance and Planning will monitor the use of allocated funds, the President said.

President Muizzu concluded by stating that all major decisions will involve public consultation, including the possibility of revising the start date of the presidential term. He affirmed that inclusive governance is vital for the Maldives’ long-term development.
